Let's see. If Apple were to maintain backward compatibility in the manner
you propose, every machine would have:

    - PCI slots
    - Nubus slots
    - 3 different PDS slots
    - modem port
    - 10/100/1000 Base-T port
    - Friendly Net port
    - Mac monitor port
    - VGA monitor port
    - ADC monitor port
    - DVI monitor port
    - SCSI-1 port
    - SCSI-2 port
    - SCSI-3 port
    - 5 other types of SCSI ports
    - 2 serial ports
    - RJ-45 keyboard port
    - 2 ADB ports
    - 2 USB ports
    - 2 FireWire ports
    - Microphone jack (original)
    - Microphone jack (PlainTalk)
    - Speaker jack
    - Headphone jack
    - Floppy drive port
    - 800k floppy drive
    - 1.2 Mb floppy drive

I estimate that this machine would sell for about $20,000.

Although this list borders on the ridiculous, the point I'm making is valid.
Apple has to draw the line on legacy technologies if for no other reason
than cost.
