All I do is either power off the monitor manually when I know I won't be using the Mac for awhile or set the energy saver on the monitor to cut off the display instead of doing it through the Mac.
When I had the 9600 I was originally running two monitors off of the Radeon 7000 Mac Ed. Then I added the flashed PC card and tried a single monitor on each. In that case I saw a very slight improvement. I don't still have the 32MB card for comparison, but the 64MB version in the G3 doesn't seem any faster to me. It will be a step up from on-board video though.
