Hi, My son's iMac DV recently died and I am trying to take the hard drive from it and add it to my beige G3/333 Minitower as a second hard and also so that he can get his data off of it before buying a new iMac. Yesterday I pulled the hard drive out of the iMac and put it into my extra bay in the MT. I should mention that the G3 has the UW SCSI hard drive, not IDE HD. The ribbon connector from the CDROM wouldn't reach to the new HD, so I tried removing the CD connector and moving it down the ribbon and then using the connector that had been in the CD for the HD. I booted it up and the hard drive showed up on the desktop, but then the CDROM didn't work. Also, with the extra HD the whole system seemed slow. For example, when typing an email, the letters didn't show up right away and it seemed like windows opened slowly, etc. However, I was able to access the hard drive. I didn't know if I need to configure anything inside (like slave/master for HD and CD?). It seems like the HD should be able to be on its own IDE bus, since I have a SCSI hard drive and only the CDROM is on the IDE bus (1). Should there be a separate ribbon connector for the ATA 0 bus? I didn't see one.
So for now, I left the hard drive mounted in the bay, but disconnected. I put the connections back like they were and the CDROM works again. I at least know that I can access the hard drive to get the data off of it, but would really like to have it as a second hard drive. I know a SCSI HD would probably be much faster, but I don't really want to buy a new hard drive or spend any money, since I am not desperate for more storage. It is just a case of I have it, so why not use it? I would appreciate any ideas about what I am doing wrong (if anything) or is this drive just too slow and messing up my whole system? Here are the details: Beige G3/333 Minitower OS 9.2.2 Internal ATA 1 - CDROM drive SCSI bus 0 - internal zip drive SCSI bus 1 -UW SCSI hard drive (original 9 GB) USB 0 - Epson printer, Umax Scanner 384 mb RAM ( I should also say I took a 128 mb card out of the iMac, but with hard drive disconnected the computer is working fine, so I don't think it has anything to do with the problem). All PCI slots filled (SCSI card, video card, and I have added a USB/FW card) ROM revision - $77D.45F2 I hope this provides enough information for someone to help me with this. If not, please email me and tell me what you need to know. I really appreciate anyone who has the time to give me some pointers on this. Thanks!
