first, don't worry about the crt, honest they are hard to damage, and that's not what's going on here (they either fade with age, or get a tiny, tiny leak and get some air in them which causes focus problems and later arcing inside the tube, but that's incredibly rare). if you're losing a gun, it's the electronics that drive it, but more likely a poor connection somewhere. i doubt it's a power supply problem, that usually shows up as a screen distortion or the screen shrinking in one or both directions, or a far more severe color distortion. it's not a problem degaussing will fix, when the tube gets magnetized it stays that way until it's degaussed, it doesn't come and go.
it could be a bad connection, either a cracked solder joint, or a dirty contact on the socket. it could be a problem with the crt drive electronics, but i doubt it. it really sounds like a software thing. i had terrible, terrible problems with the 9.2.2 update, and i don't know why. i've got a g4 with the stock video card and the update made my monitors resolution stick at 640X480, and even swapping in parts of the earlier os and deleting preference files didn't make it go away. i spent a lot of time trying to track it down and finally gave up. i honestly think there is something wrong with the finder etc. in 9.2.2, especially since sometimes it would change to a higher resolution during boot up, but then change back to 640x480 while it was putting up the desk top. i'd really start by downgrading the os 9 part, it shouldn't affect x, but.... there is something odd about the 9.2.2 os. i'd do the software check first, because it's easy, and actually likely in this case. if that has no effect, then i'd start worrying about hardware problems. in any case, it's not the crt. it could be a problem with the convergence electronics, in which case it should be less severe in the middle of the screen and worse at the edges, or possibly ok towards one side and worse towards the others.
