I bought a 40 gb hard drive and I have a question about partitioning it.

I will be running OS X and OS 9.2 and maybe OS 8.6. DO I need to keep
the OS X partition to 8 gb?

Yep, you heard right. And, that 7-8GB needs to be the FIRST partition.

Should I make 3 partitions? I will also want to run Virtual PC win 98.

Strictly speaking you need a minimum of only two (7.xGB + ?GB), but a third might be handy for something else. Don't know if Virtual PC can be installed on a non-System partition (probably, though) or if there's any real benefit. But you might just want to create or re-map it's "virtual HD" file over to another partition.
