Go with OS X for strategic reasons - you'll be where the established and the

have a long life - invest - and reap. Buildng on a firmer base, OS X will
grow taller than OS 9 ever could. Getting in, building your own ground floor
of understanding will he;p you in the onslaught of further OS X developments
- even more than we saw in the last generation.
As to what X already does better (and others can add to this):
Multi-tasking (tell me you don't want to do more of it).
Access to more competent, colorful and growing apps (you'll need them).
Time saving features such as keychain (time isn't important to you?).
Extended controls over old CP's, e.g. Sound now allows L-R balance.
Encourages a healthy "try and break it" attitude, pushing the productivity
envelope.
Or, stick with OS 9 - it's quite fine (as in delicate).
Good luck - you're still a Mac user.

P.S. When I went to mail this, my session had timed out - but unlike Netscape, which means your composition is lost, a simple "back" in Safari contained the writiing. Nuf said?
In defense of OS 9..... With IE I can change the size of the printing through Print Preview, unfortunately Safari does not have the same capability. I am a big follower of Elite Force I. I cannot play it through OS X. I must use my 9.2.2. I use Appleworks 5 and this also does not work in OS X, so, I am forced to run it in 9. I'm not complaining, I like what OS X offers. The ability to make a PDF instead of printing is very accommodating and I wish this were possible thru OS 9 w/o having to spend big bucks. The problem is always the $ involved. I wouldn't mind investing in some new apps that work flawlessly in OS X if that were in fact the case, and I am sure it is to a certain degree, I just want to know first before I take the plunge. I rely heavily on word of mouth. A list like this is very helpful when getting public opinion to the surface.
(due to a mention on this list) I bought the July issue of Mac Addict so I could get that copy of carbon copy cloner that I heard about on this list. There are also many suggestions and helpful hints to make life with OS X easier. I am looking forward to learning how to make back up DVD's of the 60 some odd (DVD) movies I own. Apparently there are instructions in the July Mac Addict to accomplish this feat. The suggestions of the screensavers paled in comparison to the plasma tunnel app that I heard about (probably here). It is by far one of the best screen savers I have ever seen (OS X).
I really don't like flipping back and forth between 9 and 10, but, I am pretty much forced to (as I really don't like the "classic" environment in OS X) I agree that eventually OS X will work better than we could expect 9 and predecessors to have performed, however with the introduction of "Panther" I fear that we will have to go through yet another transformation and possibly even have to go through another spending spree just to achieve status quo. Not looking forward to that... hence my reluctance to invest in OSX suited apps.
Last night I installed Photoshop 4 that I bought through the swaplist in OS 9 and it screwed up my Quicktime. It was fortunate that I had never deleted the quicktime installer from my desktop, as the one I downloaded last night wouldn't decompress due to some obscure "lib" not loading. All returned to normal after reinstalling Quicktime 6, like said it was lucky that it remained on my OS 9 desktop.
Like some of you on this list I cut my teeth on an early Mac (my 1st was an Apple IIe). We've come a long way since then and I am proud to be a member of the small yet vigilant group of individuals that favour Macs. Now we are again in the lead where speed comes into question. I am sure that the cloner sector is beginning to realize the bs that they have been handed is just that, and we should (with careful marketing) see many more converts from the dark side.
