> > It installs easier!! Actually, the two are about the same on installs (assuming your computer is fully supported, and there aren't any hardware conflicts with the OS). Between my Lombard and B&W, I have had no problems installing and it went as smoothly (albeit slower) than installing 9.x.
> The list seems to agree. Your being familar > with UNIX gives you an advantage. Being familiar with UNIX only gives you an advantage if you are a "power" user. For the average person, it is neither an advantage or disadvantage. My dad has never used UNIX/Linux before in his life, but is fast becoming fond of OS X. > Why is X so picky and what is it > picky about. Actually, it's more the other way around. OS 9 was very forgiving about certain things. 9 could function with things like poorly terminated SCSI, OS X does not tolerate it (due to BSD/UNIX). > I know in time 9 will get dropped--so we have to go > with what Apple supports. No. 9 will be dropped from support, but you will not be required to move on to X. 7.6 is no longer supported, but many still use it. >> It has really grown on me. For me, I like the BSD underneath. it allows me to run some stuff that wasn't avail. on >>9.2.2 or below(mostly unix aps). I did like the GUI of the "classic" Mac OS better, but I'm getting used to X slowly. > >From the above, can I surmise that more applications are available for X because of it's UNIX base? BSD is the Berkley Distribution of AT&T's Unix. BSD (FreeBSD, NetBSD, etc.) has an emulation layer that allows it to run Linux software (supposedly), though I doubt this made it into X.
