Thanks for the reply.

Turns out the slowdowns had to do with the jumpers on my motherboard.   I had
tried a little overclocking (again) and went back to normal speeds.  But the
jumpers apparently weren't making good contact and the machine was running at an
odd speed (166mhz).  Just pulling up and down on each jumper cleared it up an
the machine is running normally now.
