i can answer some of these questions
according to the apple help file under "Shortcuts for starting up" yes
1) Does one zap the PRAM the same way as on the "old world" machines?
2) Can one boot w/ extensions off? Is there a need to? Are there extensions
anymore as I knew them in OS 9? (I see a folder in the Library)
There aren't any "extensions" but you can boot into a "safe" or single user mode by holding the command and S keys again from the "Shortcuts for starting up" file
4) (related to #3) Can you still take a snapshot of the screen and have it
show up as a pict in the HD folder? Can you drag n' drop this into an
appropriate app? (I could save a .gif file in the Text reader app,
but iPhoto didn't read it)
In the Applications/Utilities folder there should be a program called "Grab" this is for screen shots and window shots etc
5) What happened to SimpleText?
In the Applications folder you will find TextEdit.
6) iMovie (v3 I believe) doesn't recognize QT movies; is this common?
they have to be DV or something like that ... save them as "streaming" and they should work. search the arcives there was a long discussion on how to do this a while back
8) Are there preference files or .tmp files of any sort in OS X? A common
fix for glitches would be to trash the preferences - anything equivalent
in OS X?
Yes, but you need to be a lot more careful what you trash ... Apple seems to have done a good job at hiding the files the average user doesn't need to mess with, most of them start with a "." so that they will be invisible. if you get one of the "Unix for beginners" books or one of the "dummies" books on Unix you can learn a lot of the really cool things this new OS can do. Don't be a-scared by the word Unix :-)
