I just tried to index my disk. Could not do it. I get a blank date & only a "Stop Indexing" option (nothing happens).

I assume that you have properly set your Ownership & Permissions Panel, with you as the owner and read & write permission granted

I am looking at my Content index panel now. I have your same settings except you did not say what was listed after Status.

What does it say after Status ? Does It should say "indexing "

If it says indexing you are automatically indexing in the back round

It is my understanding that the only time you see activity in the "Others" is when you have to manually update the index

It does say "Indexing" but no sound come from the drive (usually you here it clicking).
The activity bar stays grey. And even after 40 min, no change is visible.
I went ahead & used Disk Aid from the CD & had it verify & repair everything. Yet no change.

Also when I do Command-F, I do not get Sherlock, I get Find only.
Maybe it's all normal, but i'm missing the right feedback from the Mac.
