You can always use a hub (or switch). You just need to ensure that your account is authorized to have the required number of computers.


The necessity for using a NAT router comes from two things:

1) Not wanting to pay your ISP for additional IP allocations. Typically, the NAT Router pays for itself in the first year.

2) Many people like the extra level of "protection" that the NAT Router's ip:port based firewall brings them. While it doesn't eliminate the need for appropriate anti-virus software on each computer, such firewalls are, IMO, particularly important if any of the machines you have on your LAN are Windoze-based...
