Granted I'm no virus expert, but it seems that most viruses thrive in Windoze land because they are designed to exploit the type of format (FAT32, NTFS, etc.) rather than the type of chip the machine is using. If I write a virus that says: "Deploy your payload by going to C:/Windows/System/someimportantfile.dll" then it'll go no where on a Mac. The only virus that I can think of that may do a small amount of damage is the ones that are written in visual basic and those will only be a problem if you use an MS mail application. An old trick is to take an .exe file that you think is a virus and open it in a text editor. 99% of the "text" will be the garbage that represents binary code. But if you scroll down far enough you will see text that usually consists of the goal of the virus, or some other interested tidbit that is plainly readable.

The virus distribution over IP that was mentioned earlier seems pretty scary...

Bruce,

I agree! The UNIX of OS X is a heck of a lot more secure than any PC OS
(that's right, any PC OS).

All, don't worry about viruses. I've run a PC and a Mac forever and
have *never* had any kind of virus on either one. I am simply careful
about what I download and who it's from in email, etc. etc.

But OS X is based on Darwin Unix, which also has a release for Intels. Did Apple make Darwin more secure?
