I don't know of any real way to bench mark that except maybe MacBench. Not sure if it can benchmark data to burners though.

In theory firewire 400 moves data at 400 Megabits/sec (or 100 megabytes/sec). However, there are few drives that can accept data that fast. Most firewire external drives are simply IDE/ATA drives in a box with FW connectors on the back. Same goes for CD burners. I'm pretty sure that, because of the type of mechanism, CD burners could never burn at true FW speeds. The total speeds are somewhat limited on CD burners because if you spin a CD fast enough, in theory, it will "explode."

What ever speed the burner says it will work at (32x, 48x, and now 52x) will be as fast as it can burn (not sure what 52x translates into as far as MB/sec goes). I think most burners now-a-days have about an 8 MB cache for data. 2 MB is probably most common. Either way you'll be burning faster than any Apple internal CD burner cause they all tend to be on the slow side.

Hi

I have an iMac G3 400 with firewire 400 and USB 1.1.

What's the max speed a firewire burner will burn at?
What's the max speed my mac using firewire will burn at?
