Stating that Apple should have known about slave drives and so forth is like saying that Apple should have known about that funny 138MG limit. The limit wasn't that big a deal back then, especially since there was a SCSI bus.
Anyway, when it comes to zapping the PRAM, I have often found that the keyboard thing doesn't work. Sometimes it is the keyboard, sometimes, I suspect that the the PRAM is corrupted. Or if it boots up from the CD, do it with the free tech tools. Anyway--for all really bad problems--unplug the computer, pull the battery and let it sit for a while. I'm not sure if this is better for the computer or the owner.
