One problem with this theory. If you install X on a G4, and then transfer to a G3, you're going to run into issues because the install will load the Altivec extensions, which the G3 doesn't like much. It will work, yes, but you're going to have a significant performance degradation. That's why it doesn't load the extensions on the install on a G3.

You could do it on a B&W, or an iMac.

Hi guys, this is my first message, I am from Brazil.

A few days ago I installed my imac DV 20GB HD on my beige G3 for backup purposes. And it worked! Well, the surprise is cause it has booted on OSX installed on a 16GB partition. So the 8GB limits is for installation only. I didn't know that.
