The way you describe works best. Recently I got advantageous and used 
my left thumb to hold down the Command and Option keys and my left 
index finger to hold down R. Used my right hand to hold down P. I use 
the left thumb trick and hold down Esc with my left index finger to do 
the force quit trick, so you see, this skill is transportable... ;)

With the machine powered off,

1) place one left-hand finger on the Cmd key, and

2) place another left-hand finger on the Option key.

Space the fingers of your right hand so as to span the P and R keys
simultaneously. Maintain this spacing. With the little finger of your
right hand, press the power-on key and immediately move your right hand
back to the keyboard.
3) place the left-most right hand finger on the R key, and

4) place the right-most right hand finger on the P key.

If you've done it right, the machine should be locked into a cycle of
issuing bongs every three seconds or so until you release your fingers,
after which the machine will boot, presumably with a clean PRAM.
