PC100. PC133 should work, but sometimes Macs are finicky about RAM.
Buy from a reputable dealer who'll let you return/exchange it if it
doesn't work.

>How much can I put in it?

There are two slots, each can take up to 512MB, so 1GB total.

>Would I have to remove the 128Mb in there?

Not unless you want more than 640MB.

>Is there any fixed motherboard memory?

No.

Yes.

Pretty much any IDE drive.

>Is it IDE?

Yes.

>Whats the maximum hard drive size I can put in?

I believe the firmware will only recognize the first 137GB, so not much point
in getting a drive bigger than that. :)

>If I put a large drive in it without any partitions do I need to do anything

No. I believe the goofy OS X boot partition limitation only applies to the
the beige G3s and tray-loading iMacs.

Yes.

>Are external drives very fast and reliable?

FireWire is fairly fast. USB, on the G3 iMacs, isn't.

>Do they just show up on the desktop as a second hard drive - pretty much like

Yes. You may need some third-party formatting s/w for a FireWire drive
if you use OS 9. Dunno about OS X.

>PS the bonus of saving everything to an external drive is if OS goes down or

Yes. On the other hand, an external drive is more likely to get dropped,
stolen, etc. It's a bit of a trade-off.

Also, there's an iMac list that might be better suited for iMac questions.
