In OS 9, rebuilding the desktop would usually fix such a problem. IIRC, there is an equivalent to rebuilding the desktop in OS X.
I do not know how. But I hope that someone will know, and will inform you.
On my machine, using 9.22, I run Disk Warrior often. Disk Warrior might help your problem, and I would urge you to use it [often].

I just installed 10.2.6 on my G3DT. After using it for a day, Safari refuses to open when double-clicked. I see the zooming rectangles but then nothing happens. Can anyone recommend a good book about troubleshooting OS X? Thanks for any help. Eric in Phoenix
