768 MB is the limit in the Beige, all mobo revs (I currently run a Beige
G3/333 MT which has a 533 MHz CPU and a *Rev. A* ROM on its original Rev. 3 mobo).


The limitation is indeed in the DRAM controller chip, as is the difficulty in
handling 8-chip, high-density SDRAM sticks.

I suspect the DRAM controller chip has a problem with "banks", which problem
doesn't appear until high-density chips, and/or single-sided (i.e., 8-chip)
sticks are installed.

Hmmm...
