I have the "scanner in classic" issue as well. I have a Umax Astra 2200. The s/w for it only works in OS 9 (and they don't plan to update to OS X, I understand). When I boot to 9 the scanner and s/w works flawlessly. As a goof I tried it from OS X in classic mode and it worked! Well, it worked most of the time. Between every successful scan I got 2 or 3 errors that resulted in having to either restart the app and/or restart classic all together.
Go get VueScan from <http://www.hamrick.com> It works with your Umax just fine under OSX.
