Boot back to the OS 9.x CD and open Drive Setup. Go to the Functions menu and choose "Test Disk." I have it on good authority from Apple's engineers that if a disk passes this test that it is in good working order. I've used this test to root out many a bad disk. It takes a long time to run (about as long as writing zeros), but it's worth it. If something goes wrong the dialog box will say something to the effect of "An error was found during testing." No very dramatic, but it gets the point across.

I just bought an 80GB Seagate IDE st380021a drive and installed it in my B/W
G3 running 9.1. I put it on my Sonnot 66 ATA PCI card. It was preformatted
and it looked fine, but I formatted it just to make sure it worked using the
Erase command in the Special menu. The format operation failed. Then I
tried it again using Drive setup, and now all format utilities insist that
the drive is only 32GB (including 10.2). I've also tried zeroing all data,
and that didn't work. But the odd thing about that was that it only took 15
minutes to do that! I think my 500MB HD I tried that on took me 20 minutes.
So, any suggestions about what may be the problem (and no, the limit 32GB
jumper is not enabled)? I also contacted tech support at Seagate, but they
were no help...
