Howdy..

I have a desktop G3-233 640 ram, 80 GB hard drive..processor upgraded to a G4-466..

Anyway..would I see any improvements if I installed a third party video card?

If so, what is recommended?

Main question:

What OS are you using?

If you are using X, the only choice is a Radeon, either the original Mac edition or the 7000. There is a hack that works in X to enable Quartz extreme with pci Radeons called pciExtreme that works pretty well.

If you are using 9.x and intend to stay there for a while you can go with a Radeon or with one of the many other cards that have been produced for the pci macs. My favorite is the Voodoo series, I have a Voodoo3 3000 in my desktop (beige G3 266, 256meg OS 9.2.2). If you go this route, keep an eye on the swap list, they tend to go for under $30.

What you will get with a new(er) video card includes:

The ability to use higher monitor resolutions. My Radeon 7000 in a tricked out beige G4 running X.2.6 offers up to 2048 x 1536 on a 21" crt.

Faster screen redraws when scrolling or resizing windows or images.

Higher frame rates in games.

If you add a dvd drive, there is a hack that will allow the Radeon will allow you to play DVDs on your Mac in 9 and a few apps that will play them with no problem in X.

HTH,
Len
