Thanks for the tips; I'll try to train it better! I've reset it into training mode a couple of times and it catches quite a few, but 'way too many get through...

Are there any good filters to use with OSX's Mail program? I'm not terribly impressed with the junk filter that comes with it---I've had about all the viagra offers I want!!!Hmmm. Mail.ap's filters are pretty effective. I would guess that now that I have trained it, less than 2% of "viagra, penis enlargement, naked girls with animals, etc.." junk gets past the Junk mail box and mail rules. "Junk" is trainable. Select the training mode from the Junk menu and religously send "junk" to the Junk mailbox and it learns very fast. You can do this with the "custom" selection in the Junk menu or with mail rules.
I'd like to be able to tell the filter something along the lines of "no html except from senders in my address list, and only then after asking" and anything that contains words like viagra and all the other tiresome stuff, don't even ask...There may be aftermarket filters for mail.ap, however, Apple's work as well, or better, than any other mail filter I have used in the past, with other mailers. Macworld April 2003 has an excellent article on filters. It may be in their online archive? It is also well covered in Pogue's "OSX The Missing Manual". Junk/spam is a personal pet peeve and he covers the subject well.
I'd gladly pay for a good junk filter; does it exist?
Interestingly enough, Mail's filters sent these messages to the junkpile because it contains words that it had learned in training. I check the junk list every now and then before deleting, and saw a few names I recognized. So even tho the filtering is good, still one should not assume it is the end-all-and-be-all.
