FYI, listers...
I wanted to share a newfound great resource RE: Firewire and Mac information:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire.html
Further, check the Drive Compatibility reports on the same site:

Answering my own question: The Oxford 911 (firewire) chipset is simply faster
than other chipsets presently on the market. It's not more compatible; it's FASTER.
And in the final analysis, it seems like even trying to be cheap, the best deal
is going to come from OWC, in their Mercury Firewire/USB2.0 52X CDRW drive, with
Toast lite at $129.95.
I figure: The CDRW is not less than $40 (Lite-On mechanism seems VERY
well-supported under Mac & PC). The external USB2.0/FW enclosure is around $56,
shipped. Neither of those come with Toast lite, which would have to be
purchased separately (best cost I've found $13.99). Add all that up with
shipping, and you're already talking in the neighborhood of $120, with the
nuisance of having to involve at least 2 vendors. OWC is much easier, and price
competitive.
Thanks,
Dave
