On the bigger issue of machine incompatibility you have a lot of different drives and buses in your G3. I'd start removing stuff until it works, then add back to see if it breaks.

You said your machine was a blue and white, yes? They do not have the 8GB partition limit. That is only for Beige G3s. It doesn't matter if you have data on the drive already. You will be able to install OS X on it.
