Greetings all.
Based on recent experiments/experience, I have come to a conclusion:
"A beige G3 PowerMac, running OS 9.x, cannot play a DVD. Period."

False

You need a radeon 7000 and a hacked version of Apple's DVDplayer 2.7 and follow instructions at http://www.os9forever.com/DVDPlayer.html

I was able to play dvds on my beige with no problem in 9.2.
