Yes. And no.

Under MacOSes before X, the Beige Rev. 1As cannot support Slave drives 
(-B, and -C can).

The "problem" is a defect in the firmware, which on pre-X is stored 
solely in the ROM SIMM on the mobo.

On X, however, the on-mobo firmware is overridden by the Mac OS ROM file, 
and Slave support is thereby automagically added.

If Linux cannot see a Slave drive on your Rev. -A Beige, then it is 
because Linux doesn't contain code which emulates the patch(es) which X 
makes to the Beige in order to support Slaves.
