Keep an eye on the mouse when it stops working and see if you can see the red light. If the light goes out during normal usage then the mouse is most likely defective. Also, try running the Mac with the mouse plugged directly into a usb port. Make sure the kb and mouse are not plugged into a hub.
Leave the keyboard plugged into the port that is acting up. See if the kb stops responding w/o the mouse in it.
I doubt it's the port. The mouse is the most likely suspect.
All else fails, create a new user and see if issue persists. Creating a new user is an under-rated way to test things in OS X. Sometimes a user profile can become corrupt and start acting very, very strangely. A new user is a great test bed.

I have a G4/800 iMac Flat Panel with the Pro keyboard and mouse. (USB items, optical mouse) System is about a year and a half old. The mouse is acting strangely. Every now and then it freezes in place. The first couple of times, I was able to get it going again by unplugging it from the keyboard and then replugging it. Now I have to unplug the keyboard from the USB port and replug that to get it going. This has happened in email, word processing programs, and the like. It does not seem to be a program issue.
Anybody have any thoughts?
Nancy
