Hi Tom

I oversee a network of G4s in a Design led environment and have had an awful
lot of trouble with Quark. I have come to the conclusion that it is the
worst programmed piece of software I have ever come across.

Firstly there is an upgrade from Quark 4.1 to 4.11, wether this will help or
not I cannot say. It seems that Quark randomly dies for no apparent reason
and in ALL instances I have had to reinstall it.

ALL our G4's and Dual G4's have Mac OS X 10.2.6 and are running OS 9.2.2 in
the classic environment.

What you might try doing is restarting in OS 9, to do this goto the system
preferences, then click Startup Disk and choose the OS 9 System as your
startup volume. Depending on Which G4s you have (some of the newer machines
will NOT boot in to OS 9)it should boot normally into OS 9 completely
bypassing OS X and giving you a chance of seeing if the problem you are
having is related to OS 9 or OS X. If it still doesn't work in OS 9 BIN
Quark and do a new install in OS 9 including the update to 4.11.

Are you sure its 4.1? It could be 4.01 if it is then there is a different
upgrade route. You can download 2 updaters which have to be used in
sequence. The first updates 4.01 to 4.1 the second aforementioned updater
updates to 4.11 and both are freely available on Quarks website.

If you are still having trouble with Quark make sure you didn't install
Quark as the administrator of the machine and are trying to use it from a
different User as this will give you a Cannot run Quark on a Locked Disk
Error. Privelages are a nightmare between different users in OS X/OS 9
Crossover apps, especially Quark.

If none of this helps feel free to Email me direct and I can give as much
help as possible.

I have experience with lots of Quarks foibles under Emulation in OS X.
Although I have found the fastest way of getting it back up and running in a
standard working environment is to just reinstall the thing.

Hope this helps.

Sean

Subject: Quark 4 on 9.2 crashes

We got G4s in our office today that came with OSX and 9.2. Since our
versions of Quark are old (4.1), we have been running 9.2.

Yet still, Quark 4.1 seems to crash unless extensions are turned off. Does
anyone know what extensions are bad or if a patch is available. Upgrading is
not an immediate option.

On another note, how could one wipe the drive and reload 9.1? We can't boot
a 9.1 CD and we don't have a CD we can boot that will allow us to wipe the
system folder or drive. Any ideas how to do this, and also will the G4 Tower
run on 9.1?

Thanks
Tom
