I have had a few scsi drives do this to me. In a few cases, it seemed that the motor couldn't spin up the platters, so it wouldn't finish performing it's self-testing and thus not show up on the scsi chain. But if jiggled while starting, they worked like a charm, until you had to cold power on next time. So, from personal experience, something like this doesn't sound like the drive is really healthy. It may have not bad sectors, but if it's having troubles spinning up, you might probably won't want to waste too much time before replacing it.
