I went through three G3 DT motherboards before I found one with a working 3rd slot (Luckily I had access to motherboards to test). All failed as you described. The other two slots worked fine. SO I have wondered if it was a manufacturing defect that somehow crept by when we weren't looking- some kind of "use it or lose it" glitch.

Have you tried putting the card in one of the other slots to make sure it is not the card?

good luck.

I just bought a used iPod and got a firewire PCI card so that I could use it
w/ my Beige G3 DT computer. When I put the card in (3rd slot, farthest from
power supply) the computer wont start up. I get the desktop pattern and the
big icon w. the OS 9.2 name, the little bar begins to go across from lt to
rt, but only goes about 1/6 of the way, then the cursor turns into a
spinning ball thing, then stops spinning and it's then stalled/frozen.
I suspected an extensions conflict with FW extensions, so left the card
in and started up w. extensions off but same thing happened. I tried the
reset (cuda) button, and turning off a couple FW extensions after removing
the FW card, but that didn't help either. When I take the card out it works
normally. Do I just have a bad fw card, or what might the problem be?
I want to use my iPod!
