An option for both optical mouse and external floppy drives is a USB
mouse or USB floppy drive. My daughter has an original iMac which (doesn't
have floppy drive or ADB mouse/keyboard), and I bought her a USB optical
mouse (it came w/ a tiny USB roller-mouse) and USB floppy drive and they
work great. I think her mouse is Kensington & think the external floppy
drive is LaCie. Of course if you don't have USB ports you'll have to put a
card in a PCI slot but they're pretty cheap. Combination USB/firewire cards
are also available; they require a power connection for the firewire.
An idiosyncracy of the USB floppy drive is you have to drag the floppy
icon to the trash before you push the button on the drive to eject it or it
can freeze the computer; she keeps a stickie on the desktop to remind
herself of that.
You have to install Mac drivers (extensions) for either device which
they should provide w/ the hardware. Drivers can usually be downloaded from
the manufacturers web sites also. A USB external floppy drive can work for
both mac and pcs as long as they have drivers for Mac. OWC would probably be
a good place to get all this hardware (http://eshop.macsales.com)
