Double check the ? thing. Generally, when the iPod is confused the icon is a folder with an ! on it; not a ?.

This is tricky. Find out what this person has done to attempt a fix. If it's s/w, it could be something as simple as reformatting it and running the iPod updater to make it whole again. Or it could be a h/w issue. You could take a chance and send it to Apple for an out of warranty repair, but the cost is usually about as much as a used iPod. There are a ton of iPod sites out there. ok, so there are some ipods on ebay that are being sold that the seller says just display a folder with a ? on the screen, they say they don't know how to fix this, is this something I can fix with like a format or a spare HDD I have laying around my house if I buy one of these ipods?

it is the original 5 GB model as I can't afford much...
