I'm kinda embarrassed on this one...I SWEAR all of 'em had sharing turned on; I'd moved some files earlier the same day.
When I upgraded to 10.2.8 I had some similar problems where preferences were reset or missing. It's a major hassle to figure out what needs to be corrected.

I've was really scared by this upgrade. The computer I use most is Unsupported, but I don't think that was an issue. I used Software Update within the first hour that the update was available. I quickly noticed several small problems. Some preferences were reset to defaults, some problems loading certain web pages with Safari. Some form problems with Safari. I'd been using Safari Enhancer to disable my Safari cache, and it needed reinstallation. Mail.app lost my Sent Mail file from one mailbox. Somewhere in trying to troubleshoot these minor problems I needed to restart, and to my horror it froze solid very early on the grey apple screen. A verbose restart produced nothing except the ominous "Can't Open SCSI 6:6" where the 6's are the drive id #. I downloaded the 'stand-alone' 10.2.8 and reinstalled: nothing. There was no 'combo' update posted yet. I ran every disk utility made and got nowhere. It was very scary.
I sweated over 18 hours waiting for the combo update to be posted, and then I finally got it and it instantly fixed the whole thing. I was up and things have been fine since, except Safari 1.0 v85.5 continues to have small glitches for me, and my 'restored' Sent Mail file is missing some of the Address' in the Viewer window (they're just blank and unsorted alphabetically, but luckily the whole message text is still there, I just can't see who I sent it to without opening the 'blank' message.) Those who missed out on 10.2.8 missed nothing except perhaps major hassles as far as I can tell. If anyone is in trouble with a frozen system, I've got the 10.2.8 combo update, all 100 MB.
It is "SCARY" when they yank a patch and do not post a replacement patch, its been almost a week. - This is very very odd for any software company...
Bruce recently ranted on this and convinced me...... Apple is a HARDWARE company. Kris Tilford
