Finally, I managed to scrap enough funds to replace my aging and stock 10Gb Quantum HD with a newer Seagate Barracuda IV 120Gb 7200 ATA100 drive. At first, I was lazy to get to the main drive because it's piggy backed on to a 40Gb Maxtor I have in. So being a genius, I used the spare IDE and power cable that was destined for a ZIP drive that I never did install. I always assumed that a G4 Sawtooth has a ATA-66 bus for both channels. I was told by the Mac sales person as well as an Apple representative at the time when I bought it. Still have notes here scribbled on the invoice by the Apple tech guy that says ATA-66 for both buses. Well, 3 years later, I found out that only 1 bus is ATA-66, but the one that drives the CD ROM and the supposedly ZIP drive is only an ATA-33 bus! I've tried all combinations (NO CDRW and only a drive) and the results are the same. My Barracuda would yield an effective R/W of 18Mb/s, while the same drive on the ATA-66 main bus, it would yield an average 40Mb/s of R/W.
My G4 firmware is 4.2.8f running X 10.2.8.
On another topic, I like to learn more about OS X especially in the area of networking. I would like to know how to change or assign another drive aside from my home directory as a shared network directory for a Windows machine.
I am currently using only the "Home" directory as a network backup media for my home machines. With my Windows machine (a laptop), I use XXCOPY to clone (back up) my Windows ME HD wirelessly to my G4 Sawtooth running X. How do I change that to another drive or folder in X so I don't clutter it up with backups of my girlfriend's Mac (using Carbon Copy Cloner)? In 9, you just click on the drive icon and then click share.
Not so simple in X or am I missing something?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!
