G3 Beige and SCSI

I have a Beige G3 with a rev a motherboard with a rev c rom.  There 
is an internal zip drive - scsi and a ide hd.  My scsi external drive 
is recognized.  The external nikon ls-1000 scsi scanner is not 
recognized in 10.2.8.  The scanner is on the external port and the 
hard drive is linked to the scanner.  I have vuescan but cannot use 
it unless the scanner is recognized.  Would a scsi pci card make a 
difference?
