I stopped to check my facts and hit send, instead. The fan, itself, detects the enclosure temperature and sets its speed accordingly. It's not totally clear whether sleep should shut off the fan, but I don't think so. But, since fan speed is not under software control, it seems very unlikely that anything could have changed by going to Panther.

The hard disks spin down & monitor turns off, but the fan keeps going.
