Charles,
I have the same original CD-ROM drive in my beige G3 DT and it has been that
way from day one, when I got it new from CompUSA. That is only sometimes when a
CD is in it.  As you indicate, it isn't every time,  but some times it runs
full speed for no reason I have determined,  even some times when it doesn't
appear to be being used to access info on the CD. It is aggrevating,  but since
most times there isn't a CD in the drive, I have just learned to ignore it.  If
you find the answer, let me know what it is.  :-)
