Have you tried reseating the CPU daughtercard? I had similar symptoms on my Pismo (chime but no video) after pulling the CPU daughtercard to upgrade the memory in the lower slot. At first I assumed it was a bad memory module, but after some memory module swaps it appeared that the problem was elsewhere. I finally discovered that some of pins on the CPU daughtercard were (apparently) not always making good contact. I found that by pressing firmly, but gently :), above each of the corner pins when reseating the CPU daughtercard I was able to get consistently good connections. Hope this helps, I've also been looking at the same hard drive.
