audio with B&W question

Hi,

    So, what happens if I plug the stock audio into my dolby surround 
pro-logic receiver with a straight through adapter? I have the DVD 
module on the stock video card (more questions about that on another 
post) with a DVD ROM drive and am trying to improve the sound over the 
tiny Koss speakers I got at St. Vinnies.  If I want real sorround sound 
do I  need an audio card?  If so what would you advise I look for?  Does 
changing form OS 9.2.2 to 10.2.x change anything?
