I'll take a stab.

Hi everybody,
So, I'm getting ready to take the plung. I could use a lot of advice. What are the various versions of 10.2 (10.2.x), how do they differ,
Sometimes you will see a "combo" update. The Combo update is simply a combination of updates. 10.2.8 had a combo update that would take you from 10.2.6 to 10.2.8 in one step (skipping 10.2.7) as explained in this kb:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25524
Usually, in between major OS updates there are "security" and "installer" updates that need to be applied. Not sure if it's out yet, but there is an upgrade path to 10.1. Pretty soon Apple will put out an upgrade path to 10.2. It will explain the order of updates and what they mean. To see an example, check out the 10.1 upgrade path:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106713
where do I download them once I install 10.2.
Use the system preferences to perform software updates. Explained well in this Apple kb article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106704
Why do some people prefer 10.2.6 to 10.2.8,
Some folks experience stability issues. I did not experience any problems with 10.2.8 using a Mac very similar to yours: a G3 450. I'm guessing that it was mostly a problem with the "FrankenMacs" that are out there, vs. a "stock" Mac.
which version has the least interference when using classic (OS 9) mode,
No versions of 10.1 or 10.2 that I know of "interfere" with Classic. Classic mode is relatively benign in nature. In fact, I've seen Classic work fine on a G4 1.25 when actually booting to OS 9.2 would crash with an error type 41.
is classic mode OS 9.2.2 and if not can I upgrade it to that,
Any version of 9.2.x is fine for Classic mode. I recommend the "newest" version; 9.2.2.
will changing to 10.2 prevent me from interacting on a LAN with someone using 9.2.2, especially while gaming, (like Quake)?
It shouldn't be a problem. OS 10.2 has the same ability to use AppleTalk and/or TCP/IP sharing over a network. In fact, IMHO, it's more refined in X than 9.2.x.
I could use other advice concerning 0monitors and sound but I'll put that on a different post.
Looking forward to that post!
