I know that X uses a whole different method of memory management than 9. What I am trying to figure out is how much memory do I need to run X without getting into using the hard disk for swapping. I know the minimum recommended is 256 Meg.

I am getting ready to put X on my work Mac, which has 256 meg right now. My home Mac (Maxed out Beige G4) has 768 meg and I think that might be overkill for home use. I know that in 9, all I would have to do is pull up About This Mac when all the programs I would have open at once were open, and I could see total memory usage, and free memory, at a glance.

I am guessing that in X (10.2.8) that if I open the Process Viewer (with all apps running as I do normally) and add up the %memory column then multiply that x the installed ram, I will get the actual amount of Ram that I am using. ie: 36.1% x 768 = 277 meg in use. Thus, If my assumptions are correct, I can safely, with no performance hit, remove a 256 meg stick to take to my work mac, leaving 512 at home and putting 512 in the work Mac.

If anyone out there can confirm or refute the above, please enlighten me.

Thanks in advance
Len
