And it doesn't make sense that RAM on both Macs would be fine with Jag and not work with Panther.
BUT... I recognize that my experience is not typical.

If the above have been accomplished then maybe you should check out your RAM. Have you upgraded RAM? It is possible a chip was fine in jaguar but is flaky in 10.3
