Beige HDD slow wake-up

My son's beige G3/266 has the stock IDE drive and it takes *forever* 
(over a minute) to wake up from sleep.  The screen comes back quickly, 
the mouse is active, but I get no spin-up for what seems like an 
eternity.  Anyone with knowledge or experience on this issue?
