I have some old beige G3s and they do this sometimes and they are on OS9.
( actually my wife does this sometimes but that's another proprietary operating system)

I have had my G3 beige do this and what I did was clear the pram by holding down option comand P R at startup. This seemed to clear the problem every time it was slow in startup.
