Hi all;
I've got a Beige G3-300 MT with a 40 gig Maxtor as the boot drive and a
4.5 gig WSE Quantum drive which is hooked to an ATTO-Apple SCSI card which
is flashed to ATTO.
Now to the problem. Sometimes the SCSI drive works and the Mac boots,
sometimes it hangs at the start of boot at the gray screen. The drive always
spins up, you can hear and feel it running.
I had termination problems with this drive at one time, as a jumper fell
off. Put it back on and all was well for a while. Now it's doing the same
thing again. I've checked the termination and the TP and TE jumpers are in
place and the power cable is good +5 & +12 volts with the 2 middle wires as
grounds. I've even tried booting the Mac with the power off the SCSI drive
with the ribbon still hooked up and then hooking the power back after boot
is complete. The drive spins up, but is not recognized by any utility I
have. Tried Drive setup, Mt. Everything, SCSI probe, nothing sees it.
ASP recognizes the ATTO card, so that should be OK. Since the drive is
spinning up, would this indicate a bad ribbon cable?
Another question. The SCSI ribbon cable is either a 3 or 5 connector
cable, have to open the box to see. If I can find the break in the cable and
since if there is only 1 drive on the cable it must be at the end of the of
the cable and terminated, can the cable be cut or a connector be moved to
bypass the bad spot in the cable?
Any and all replies greatly appreciated. TIA
