I'm running a B&W G3/350 (rev.2) using OS 8.6, with 2 internal HD's (6GB - the original boot disk + a second internal 60 GB HD that was put in last year), and 448 MB RAM. The machine boots from the 6GB original HD - When the machine booted up last night, it seemed to be working fine and then the mouse froze just after I had disconnected from the net (using Netscape 4.75). I couldn't shut down the machine so I pushed the "restart" button on the front of the tower and it rebooted. After it rebooted, the dialogue box came up on the screen & indicated the system hadn't been shut down properly so it began to run Disk First Aid. Just about half way through the scan, an Error Message appeared in the dialogue box and it immediately stopped running Disk First Aid.

Instead it said: "Error: And error has been detected on your boot disk and Disk First is unable to repair it. Please back up your drive immediately. Restart your machine and go to the Help Page in the Macintosh OS for for more information about running Disk First Aid".

I tried to re-boot the machine and held the SHIFT key down to see if it made any difference without the preference loading but it didn;t seem to matter. The only thing I can think of that might be related to this sudden change was downloading a Word 2000 document that I had sent from my Dell laptop. The document is only 350 k, it didn't contain any graphics or images (just plain text).and it seemed to download fine; so other than that, I can't figure out what's going on.

Unfortunately I don't have any other diagnostic tools to examine the drives more closely but I'm wondering if my original 6 GB HD is corrupt or dying? What sort of programs might be helpful (esp. since First Aid couldn't fix it)? Does this sound like it will require a trip to the Apple service tech at my university? I just don't want the problem to corrupt my second 60GB HD that was installed last year - it seems to work fine. Any ideas or suggestions from the list would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance, Sue
