I have been using OSX for two years now, but feel like a complete idiot with Panther.

For two weeks I have been struggling with getting Panther operational on a G3/400 B&W with a G4/450 processor upgrade. (The processor upgrade works just fine with nothing other than the firmware update)

I had strange problems when I booted into OS 9. For some reason the start up would automatically launch into desktop rebuild, and attempt to rebuild the desktop on the OS 10.3 partition, completely destroying the ability to boot into OS 10.3 (I was disappointed that nobody seemed to have any insight into that issue, but am trying to work around the problem)

Erased and reformatted the drive, and did a fresh install of OS 10.3 and the various updates.

I am trying to use Disk Utility to create a Disk Image of the OS 10.3.2 partition, and locate it on another internal drive, in case the Desktop Rebuild problem raises its ugly face again. I can not seem to create a Disk Image using Disk Utility when booted from the OS 10.3.2 partition, or when booted from the Panther Install CD. However, I can successfully create a restorable Disk Image using Carbon Copy Cloner.

When I try to use Apple's Disk Utility program I get an error: (little red stop sign) and the message "Device Busy."

There are two hard drives in the computer. One is the original 12 GB drive with two partitions: OS 10.3.2 and a blank partition that will house OS 9.2.2. The other is a 40 GB storage drive, as slave. I am trying to put the Disk Image on the storage drive.

Anyone encountered the "Device Busy" error? Or can someone point out what I am doing wrong?

If the Desktop Rebuild problem crops up again, I would like to be able to boot from the OS 10.3 install CD and use Disk Utility to restore my OS 10.3.2 partition, using the Disk Image on the storage drive.

Nancy
