The problem is it does hurt OSX.

It destroys the ability to boot from OS 9 into OS 10. I don't know why or how, only that it somehow "breaks" the ability to boot into ten. I have tried restoring the OS 10 partition and a number of Open Firmware and Terminal commands. Nothing fixes the problem.

Background: I am doing a fresh installation of my programs on a new-to-me G3/400B&W. I started with a freshly formatted and partitioned hard drive. I am using OS 9.2.2 and 10.3.2 on separate partitions.

So far, the only program that triggers an automatic rebuilding of the desktop is AppleWorks. This is after the initial install of the program. (I don't have the disk with me at the moment, but it is version six-point-something) The rebuild pops up when the computer restarts after the AppleWorks install. It immediately launches into rebuilding OS 10 then moves on to OS 9. It does not seem to make any difference if I let it run completely or stop it.

My work around de jour is to (1) install OS 9.2.2 and all of the OS 9 programs, clone that partition, then delete it (2) install OS 10.3.2 and all of the programs, clone that partition, then delete it (3) erase and partition the drive (4) restore the OS 9 and OS 10 partitions

I only know of one other person who has encountered this Desktop Rebuild problem. I have posted the problem to four different discussion forums. So far, nobody has come up with a cure.

This is a long, involved issue, but you should consider letting it finish the desktop rebuild. It won't hurt OS X in any way. Caution: Desktop rebuilds of OS 9 take forever with OS X loaded on the drive...

Last night I started over for a third time. All I had on the machine was O 9 and 10.3, and the various updates to 10.3. When I booted into 9, it immediately started rebuilding the desktop on the OS 10 partition. The second or two it took to click on the "Stop" button was enough to screw the OS 10 desktop.
