Hello Bill, I hope some of my reply makes sense :-) Forgive me for removing some of your original mail while I interleave my suggestions. Here goes...
>Hi there. This is my first post to this list, which I have been receiving >for a couple of weeks. I hope I am not asking questions that are too >basic... > >I have been given (for free!) a blue & white G3, 400 mhz I think. I've got a B&W G3 350Mhz here. At the back, underneath the power sockets, there's a silver sticker with the machine spec. (processor speed, etc.). Mind you, mine's not 100% correct - it says the machine's a 350MHz with 512K cache yet the machine actually has a 1M cache :-0 >This G3 is completely new territory for me. How do I find out what this >thing does? If anyone could offer me the most basic guidance on how to >proceed I would really appreciate it. > >For instance, I assume my current monitor would work, but will the keyboard >and mouse from my C500 work with it? If not, what kinds should I be looking >for (or avoiding) and what might they run me? The B&W's supplied graphics card has a VGA socket - the machine was supplied with an adapter for plugging in the older Mac monitor socket, but it's unlikely you got that with the machine (I'm not sure where mine is anymore - never had to use it). I'm not sure if you'll need the adapter or not - perhaps someone else can confirm whether the C500 uses a Mac or VGA socket? The B&W has an ADB port at the back, so your existing keyboard and mouse should be OK. If you need to buy new, you're probably better off looking for a decent USB keyboard and mouse since there are so many around now that can be used with the Mac (I'm still using the much maligned original B&W keyboard and a Logitech Marble Mouse trackball). The Macally keyboard that came with the 'new' machine - does it have a USB socket (rectangular) or ADB (round)? Once you know what it is, you should be able to plug that into one of the USB ports at the back, or the ADB, along with one of your mice from the C500 and start the machine up. Provided the machine is in a good state of health you should be able to confirm then that OS 9.x is installed as the machine starts up. Provided the mouse and keyboard work you can then access the Apple System Profiler to find out the machine's exact spec (RAM, disk size, etc.). > >Also, is there a way to get manuals for the unit itself and whatever >software it might have? > >My thanks for any information, thoughts, leads, etc. > >-- >Bill Spencer in New Hampshire > You should be able to track the manuals down on the Apple support site. Good luck - the B&W is a great machine. Neil Hughes -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
